Social Justice
& Inclusivity
Many see this as our form of evangelism and mission work, guided by reason, compassion, dialogue, and tolerance.
We have taken public stands on human rights issues such as the Flint Water Crisis, immigration, marriage equality, and Black Lives Matter.
Anti-Racism
Ever mindful of racism in America, both past and present, our congregation strives to be the beloved community envisioned by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our services often feature readings and poetry by people of color, along with sermons highlighting the lives of Black Americans — some famous, others nearly lost to history. Join us to experience a truly hate-free atmosphere, where we celebrate our common humanity and work toward ever-greater unity.
Green Sanctuary
The Unitarian Universalists Association provides the framework for congregations to pursue projects and activities that lead to recognition as a Green Sanctuary. At Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Flint, we use environmentally safe products in our building and on our grounds, volunteer to clear litter from our roadway, continually improve our energy footprint, and encourage members to do the same.
Land Acknowledgement
Our congregation acknowledges that we stand on the traditional lands of the Council of Three Fires and the Anishinaabe peoples, the Indigenous inhabitants of Michigan. We support Indigenous-led organizations and grassroots change movements and encourage others to do the same. We also back campaigns led by Indigenous communities seeking the return of carefully chosen lands.
LGBTQ+ Welcoming
We are a Welcoming Congregation, recognized by the Unitarian Universalist Association. This means we affirm and include people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) at every level of congregational life — in worship, programming, or social occasions.
As a Welcoming Congregation, we have pledged to:
- Honor the lives of all people and equally affirm displays of caring and affection, regardless of sexual orientation.
- Celebrate diversity by using inclusive language and content in worship.
- Incorporate an understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences throughout all programs, including religious education.
- Affirm and celebrate LGBTQ+ issues and history.
Other Opportunities
From picking up trash to getting out the vote, opportunities at UUCF to serve the broader community are endless. Stay in the loop by joining our weekly E-update, following us on Facebook, or attending Sunday services to discover new ways to put our faith and values into action.
