Our Sunday Service: November 9th Summary: Uni-tarian Uni-versalism is not an easy path to follow. Hmmm…maybe that explains the only 900 congregations in all of America? But gee, it’s not so hard, we just try to bless everyone’s allegiance to their own tribe, while showing we can also be one. (Caution: Do not try explaining this while talking religion at the hair salon). But this good problem happens because our faith has two “Unis” in its name, which sorta-kinda implies we have a thing for “oneness!” No matter how 60s it sounds, we just can’t help saying “for the good of the planet, we must be one!” Join us as we use both reason and love to decide just what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist.. Our Sunday Service: October 26th Summary: You would not want to meet him in a dark (or well-lighted) courtroom, unless he was on your side. When Thurgood Marshall argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, he went 29 for 3, winning more cases before our highest court than any other American. In 1930, young Thurgood applied to the University of Maryland School of Law because it was just a few blocks from his parents’ house. They denied him admission because he was Black. (Belated note to the U of Maryland: Don’t piss off a brilliant lawyer in training)! All in good time, Thurgood righted that wrong and changed America forever. Our Sunday Service: October 19th Summary: As we hear of violence and oppression around the world, we may find hope by reminding ourselves of times and places when human beings did organize themselves into durable just societies. These were not idealistic communes in the woods or religious movements, but well-organized societies that managed to achieve a social justice far beyond what was typical of their ages. These episodes have largely been forgotten or erased from history by conquering empires; many of them are known only through archaeological studies. I will tell you of some of these times and places: from the world’s first cities in 4000 BC, to the Indus Valley civilization, widely revered as the most advanced society of 2000 BC, to the small democratic city states in Central America, which held off the encroachments of the Aztec empire for centuries, to the peaceful coexistence among Christians, Jews and Muslims in 12th-century Andalusia which lit the spark for the European Renaissance a century later. I will discuss what principles and strategies they used to organize their societies, how they ended, and how their experience may inform our ideas of justice today. Our skin’s surface, the largest of all of our organs, sheds thousands of cells per minute. But wouldn’t it be nice if we could just wriggle out of our entire skins of old habits and roles when we feel ready for a change? Let’s give it a try in 2025, the Chinese Year of the Snake that symbolizes transformation. It’s always good to shed the old and embrace opportunities for growth, even if you don’t like snakes. Our Sunday Service: August 31st Summary: One of the greatest tools for sustaining community is loving accountability. It is the willingness and ability to speak truth to power, stand firm in our convictions, and ask others to join us in that space–especially when it’s uncomfortable. We are again living in an American moment where many communities have framed blind obedience to a would-be dictator as “loyalty” and white supremacist-patriarchy as natural and inevitable. This is not the first time nor will it be the last. James Baldwin notes that while “everything that is faced can’t be changed, nothing can be changed until it is faced.” Once again, progressives have an opportunity to wrest the national conversation away from those who’d see this country remain an oversized Mar-a-Lago by reminding ourselves and each other that greatness is achieved by support, critique, and growth. While progressives have a long history of pushing America to be closer to its highest self, there’s always more space for growth, strategy, and love.
